Is CBD Oil Kosher?

Is CBD Kosher banner for jewish community

Cannabidiol (CBD) Oil is created from the raw material of the Cannabis Sativa (aka cannabis or hemp) plant and is loaded with wellness enhancing phyto-cannabinoids. The process that results in the production of CBD Oil removes all traces of the Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the mind altering enzyme that is incorrectly associated with all CBD derived oils, creams and balms.

The truth is that you could no more become highon CBD Oil than you could on taking vitamins or any other dietary supplements. The way in which CBD Oil is able to gently assist the body’s innate endo-cannabinoid system - a network of neurotransmitters and receptors that regulates many of the body’s functions, like pain, moods and memory - is resulting in more and more people in the western world turning to its health assisting characteristics.

Historic Use

Whilst its use by people in the West is only just getting started, CBD Oil has been used for centuries in other parts of the world, with civilisations dating back many thousands of years enjoying the gentle lift to the body that it provides. So, with many people from all walks of life, different cultures and faiths residing in the United Kingdom considering using it, there are certain questions that naturally come up.

One of those questions relates to Judaism and to whether CBD Oil is Kosheror not. To the uninitiated, the term Kosheris one that is used to determine whether foods are permitted under Jewish religious law, according to the Torah. With more than a quarter of million people of the Jewish faith residing in the UK, it’s important to know whether or not its consumption is permitted.

What the Torah States

In Hebrew, Kashrusmeans pure, which is the root of the word Kosher. There are many applications of the term when it comes to livestock and other foodstuffs, but when it comes to plants, there are just a couple of basic rules:

  1. All plants and bushes that grow in the soil are by their nature, kosher. That is unless they are infested with any kind of insect, which must be removed to ensure its status or grown in impure soil
  2. All plants that have been grown naturally and not been made impure due to modern food processing practices are kosher

Essentially, as long as the plant has been grown in a natural way, free from contamination or infestation ANDprocessed naturally, then it would seem that all plants that fall into this category can be deemed as Kosher.

The Growing Process

So, whether or not CBD Oil isor indeed isn’tkosher, depends entirely on the purity of not just the end product, but in the conditions in which it was grown. At Nature’s Blends, our CBD Oil is created from hemp plants from reputable, organic farms in mainland Europe whose soil is rich in nutrients and not contaminated with the raft of pesticides used in mass production farming.

This aspect is extremely important, as the cannabis plant is what’s known as a hyperaccumulator, which basically means that it absorbs everything in the soil. If there are impurities in the soil, then they are going to be present in the plants as they grow. Not all suppliers of CBD products source their plants from these kinds of farms, so in this context, the CBD Oil manufactured cannot be guaranteed as pure, as the soil it’s grown in, can’t be verified as contaminant free.

The Extraction Process

Another aspect of CBD Oil production that can affect its kosher status is how the oil is extracted from the raw plant matter. Some producers use alcohol or solvent based techniques to extract the cannabinoids, which in theory, is supposed to be completely evaporated before the extraction process is completed. Can it be 100% guaranteed that none of these solvents are present afterwards - at a microscopic level?

The answer is no, you can’t. Not completely. This is why we use a natural, gentle way to extract the health assisting cannabinoids from the raw hemp. CO2 extraction uses carbon dioxide at high pressure to draw out the natural goodness from the plant matter in a way that leaves absolutely no toxins behind. In this case, the result oil canbe deemed as pure and kosher.

Not leaving anything to chance, we put our CBD Oil through further rigorous independent laboratory testing to ensure that there are absolutely no contaminants in it. Then and only then, does it get given the Nature’s Blends seal of approval.

In Conclusion

At Nature’s blends, we believe that when CBD Oil is grown and processed in the most natural methods possible, then there is absolutely no reason why it should not be considered to be kosher. It adheres to the laws set down in the Torah for plants grown in the soil and therefore should be deemed as suitable for those of the Jewish faith.
